Customers can now pay their utility bill from their phone via text message! The text message component of our Bill Notification Service has been around for about a year but the reply-to-pay portion has now been enabled. If you've been using the text message component previous to this announcement then you have already been upgraded to have reply-to-pay. The requirements for a customer to utilize Reply-to-Pay are:
- Must create an Online Profile ("Register Now")
- Must add a mobile number and complete the text message confirm/validate process
- Must be enrolled in Bill Notification Services
- Must have a saved payment profile
When the customer receives their text with the option to pay, they will be notified to to reply with “Pay” in order to initiate the payment. If your utility adds a convenience fee, they will be notified of the fee with an additional text message: “There will be a $x.xx fee added to your transaction for a total payment of $xx.xx. Reply “confirm” to accept.” Once your customer confirms the fee, they will receive a text with the status of the transaction (Success/Fail) and to check their email for the receipt. For utilities that don't add a fee, the customer would skip these couple of fee messages and go right to the status message and email receipt.
When advertising this new service, please be sure to include a notation that messaging and data rates may apply.
Please contact us for more information and keep in mind that, depending on what utility billing software you use, there may be API fees from that vendor in order to turn this feature on for you.
